Founded almost 15 years ago as a small party at DEF CON, Queercon is now the largest network of LGBT hackers and security professionals around the world. A full-fledged non-profit dedicated to the intersection of the LGBT and information security and technology communities, Queercon has chapters in many major cities and a main event at the DEF CON conference in Las Vegas every year.
For 2013, the 10th anniversary of Queercon’s inception, we decided to embrace the DEF CON tradition of electronic badges for attendees. We designed and produced 100 active electronic badges for Queercon attendees and distributed them at the conference. I served as the programmer for the project. Every year, we’ve increased the quantity and – importantly – although we now allow attendees to pay to pre-reserve a badge, every year we’ve given more away for free than the previous year.
We’ve produced a new badge at a greater quantity every year, growing to 285 in 2017 and planning to grow again in 2018.
